Introduction A county seat of Richland County Wahpeton is located on the Red River of the North, near the Minnesota border. Wahpeton covers a total area of 12.9 km² (5.0 mi²), all land.
The most important river is the Red River of the North which also forms one of the most fertile river valleys in the world. It also forms the state boundary between North Dakota and Minnesota. Near the river's head-waters on the bank of the Bois de Sioux is Wahpeton, North Dakota.
